Taino

Made by Dominican's artisans from the small town of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic

Employing the techniques and concepts of the original inhabitants of the Dominican Republic, the Taino people, these pieces of pottery by today's Artisans are created with great skill and they embrace the characteristics that the earliest potter made.

The clay and firing process results in a rich natural color and the symbolism in each piece a belief and spiritualism that the Taino people died for.

These Artisans still use kilns that are dug into the earth and fired up. No modern techniques are used. The engravings are all done by using sticks and shaped by hand.

"Wayne Fijal is a potter who has worked as the studio technician in Ceramics and Fine Arts since 1982. He has taught ceramics and sculpture classes at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and received his Bachelors in Fine Art from the University of Manitoba and his Masters in Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He enjoys creating functional, decorative pottery and has exhibited his work in numerous venues across Canada over the last 30 years."
